hi vis tees

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

An ANSI Class 2 hi-vis t-shirt is high-visibility apparel that meets ANSI/ISEA 107 for workers near traffic moving 25 to 50 mph. It must have at least 775 sq in of fluorescent background material and 201 sq in of retroreflective tape, so you stay visible in daylight and at night.

OSHA requires high-visibility or reflective warning garments for workers exposed to vehicle traffic, such as road work zones, flagging and excavation near roadways. OSHA points to ANSI/ISEA 107 for the design standard, so most employers choose Class 2 or Class 3 garments. Always confirm your site's specific requirements with your safety manager.

Type O is for off-road use, such as warehouses. Type R is for roadway and temporary traffic control work. Type P is for public safety, such as police and emergency responders. Check the sewn-in label for the standard, type and class before you buy.

FR hi-vis tees are made with flame-resistant fabric, so they can protect workers in flash fire or arc flash risk, while a regular hi-vis tee is not designed for that. Testing and certification cost more, so the price is higher.

Choose long sleeve for more coverage against sun, sparks, scrapes and cold mornings, and for extra visible surface area on the arms. Choose half sleeve for hot weather and lighter tasks. If your job also has flash fire or arc flash risk, pick an FR-rated style regardless of sleeve length.

Wash in cold or warm water with mild detergent, and avoid bleach and fabric softener, since they can damage the tape and fabric. Air dry or tumble dry low. Replace the shirt when the color fades badly or the tape peels, cracks or stops reflecting, because it may no longer be compliant.
