FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Men's FR (flame-resistant) clothing is workwear made to resist ignition and self-extinguish when exposed to flame or heat, instead of melting or continuing to burn. It is commonly worn by electricians, welders, oil and gas crews, utility workers, and others exposed to flash fire or electrical arc hazards. Forge FR's men's collection includes shirts, jeans, pants, coveralls, bibs, hoodies, and jackets.

FR clothing resists ignition and stops burning once the flame is removed. Arc-rated (AR) clothing is FR clothing that has also been tested for electric arc flash and carries a rating in cal/cm². All AR clothing is FR, but not all FR clothing is AR. If your job involves electrical arc hazards, check the garment label for its arc rating.

NFPA 2112 is the standard for flash fire protection and is common in oil and gas. ASTM F1506 is the standard for arc-rated clothing used in electrical work and is referenced by NFPA 70E. If your site has both hazards, look for garments that meet both, and confirm on each product page or label.

It depends on your workplace's arc flash risk assessment. NFPA 70E PPE categories 1 to 4 use minimum arc ratings of 4, 8, 25, and 40 cal/cm². Category 1 and 2 are typically met with a single FR shirt and pants or coveralls. Your safety manager should confirm the right rating for your task.

FR clothing protects against flash fire, not heavy sparks or slag. Many welders wear FR workwear because it will not ignite or melt, but lightweight FR shirts can still get burn holes from grinding or stick welding. For heavy welding, use heavier-weight fabrics or dedicated welding apparel over your FR layer, and follow your employer's safety rules.

The outermost layer must be FR, and what is underneath matters too. Wear natural-fiber layers such as cotton, or FR base layers. Avoid synthetics like polyester or nylon next to your skin, because they can melt in a fire and worsen burns.

Follow the care label. In general, wash FR clothing inside out and avoid bleach and fabric softeners, which can reduce performance on some treated fabrics. Replace garments that have holes, thin worn areas, or contamination from flammable substances like oil or grease. Fabric type also matters, so check whether your garment is inherently FR or treated.
